HOW CAN ACUPUNCTURE HELP WITH PREGNANCY?
In my practice, I treat the following complaints related to pregnancy: nausea, morning sickness, swelling (especially in lower limbs), water retention, lower back pain, hemorrhoids, inflammation and pain on symphysis pubis (pubic bone). I have even had excellent success helping to turn a breech baby through acupuncture treatments.
During pregnancy, a woman’s body goes through very intense stages of change. It grows another human being, during which time, it spends all of it's energy developing that healthy baby. Acupuncture in pregnancy can keep your body in optimum shape by supporting it through each stage.
My mentor, Ikeda Masakazu Sensei, has a chapter in his book dealing with Obstetrics in which he correlates each stage of a pregnancy to a different organ stage. This means that at a particular stage of pregnancy, one organ-meridian system (according to Oriental Philosophy) is working harder than the others to ensure the baby’s health. For example, the Liver Meridian governs the first month of pregnancy.
In TCM philosophy, a woman’s health depends primarily on a healthy Liver and particularly the “liver blood” health. Many miscarriages, even unnoticed ones, will occur in this stage if there is an imbalance in the Liver Energy system. The following month is the Gallbladder stage and this is when we might manifest Gallbladder issues (if you are already familiar with the Chinese meridian clock, you will know the system of organs/meridians which follow).
After the Gallbladder, we have: the 3rd month ruled by the Pericardium, the 4th month Triple Burner, 5th month Spleen, 6th month Stomach, 7th month Lung, 8th month Large Intestine, 9th month Kidneys, and finally the 10th month Bladder* (According to TCM we do have 10 months of pregnancy). Therefore, knowing how each of these stages play a role, it is important that the pregnant mother makes sure that her meridians are healthy at all times so that her infant can develop into a healthy newborn.
PLEASE NOTE: OUR CLINIC IS EQUIPPED WITH A SPECIAL PREGNANCY TABLE WHERE FUTURE MOTHERS CAN BE POSITIONED SAFELY ON THEIR BELLY, VERY COMFORTABLY.
